What is Mission Sewing All About?

The members of Mission Sewing/Knitting Circle use their God given talents to provide hand-made items to others less fortunate. The following information will give you an idea of what we do and where the items that we make go. While “Prayer Shawls” are being knit or

crocheted, the person making the shawl prays for the recipient that he or she will feel the warm

loving arms of our Lord surround them. The majority of the shawls have been given to members of our congregation by the Caring Ministry. When we have more than we need for church members they are

donated to Casa de la Luz Hospice. Since October 2007 we have sent 34 knit hats, 39 mufflers, and eight pairs of mittens to the Apache Reservations in the White Mountains. Matt Lange and his wife teach school in Whiteriver and McNary and we have asked them to distribute these warm items.

Chemo hats are sewn, knit, or crocheted for patients that have lost their hair because of their chemotherapy treatments.

Preemie hats, sweaters, and booties are delivered to the NW Women’s Center to be given to premature newborns.

Aviva Children’s Services works together with the Child Protection Agency delivering

duffle bags to children that are being taken into custody, tote bags for a variety of purposes, and Christmas stockings to foster children. We also provide quilts, afghans, and sweaters for the children. Before Christmas of 2007, three of our members made 45 stockings, another member hosted a program for sewers from all over town to make stockings (that group averages around 250 stockings), and another member made doll wardrobes, including the dolls, to be given to the children in custody.

We often hear a story from someone who has been ill or a child who has received one of our gifts say “You mean, someone that I don’t even know made this just for me”.  Well, that is what Mission Sewing/Knitting is all about.
