PIECEMAKERS: A QUILTING MINISTRY

Quilt for Our New Sanctuary

The Piecemakers and Some of Their Work

In January 2002, the Friday Morning Bible Study at St. Andrews offered a three week "intercession" course—short term classes on various subjects. One was a quilting class. The three-week goal was to make a quilt top for a log cabin quilt. Ten women signed up and took the class.  After the quilt tops were made and the three-week intercession ended, the women were having too much fun to quit. As a result, Piecemakers became a permanent group within the Women’s Ministry at St. Andrews.

Fellowship is an important aspect of this group. The Piecemaker quilters have developed strong friendships by doing many things together.  They have had two quilt shows at the church in May and December or 2003 and will have another show this November of 2007.  Their work has been donated to several local missions including Project Linus Quilts and the Newborn Neonatal Nursery at Northwest Hospital. (LINK TO PHOTOS )  In the past they have donated their work to be used for door prizes at the annual Women’s Ministry Prayer and Praise Breakfast. They worked together in 2004-2005 to make the quilted cross for the new sanctuary entitled, “Garden of Eternal Life”. They also worked together to make 5 Advent Banners for the Sanctuary in 2006. This May they made and handed out pillowcases to the graduating high school seniors, as the headed out into their futures.  They hope to continue the pillowcase tradition for years to come.  Most of the time, we support and learn new quilting techniques from each other while working on our own personal projects.

The Piecemakers continue to look for ways to reach out to other women both inside and outside our congregation.   All skill levels are welcome, even those who have never quilted before, but would like to learn.  Although your own sewing machine is needed, we have donated fabric you can use.   Some people come for the entire day and some come for just a few hours.  We usually go out to inexpensive lunch places together and sometimes visit local quilt shops.  We have devotions each meeting, usually with a quilting theme, and pray for each other and our church family.

Join the Piecemakers!!  We meet every Wednesday between 9am and 4pm in the Choir Room on the SW Campus.   Call Tina Bush 742-9577 or Jana Knutson, 297-7494 for more information.
