The Rev. August "Gus" Schmitt, Jr. has accepted the invitation of the Interim Search Committee to serve as our interim while the search for a full-time pastor is completed. Gus will serve as head of staff, preach on Sundays, meet and serve with staff, moderate session meetings and serve with committees.
He is a native of New Orleans, a graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. He has served churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Colorado. Before his "retirement" in 1999, he was the development officer for the Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation for nine years serving the Synod of the Southwest.
Gus has been an interim on the staff of Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, and interim pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, First Presbyterian Church in Las Cruces, NM and Trinity Presbyterian Church here in Tucson. He completed his interim at Trinity the end of April.
He and his wife make their home in Phoenix and they have a daughter, Elizabeth, who is entering her junior year at the U of A. He has three grown children and six grandchildren.
